The Great Migration: Why Claude is Winning

For a long time, ChatGPT was the undisputed king. But recently, the tide has turned. Following a string of controversies including OpenAI’s new partnerships for military surveillance and the introduction of ads for free users, people are looking for an alternative.

Anthropic (the makers of Claude) took a different stand, refusing to allow their models to be used for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. This ethical boundary has struck a chord. Claude has recently surged to the top of the App Store, with daily sign-ups hitting record highs. Users aren't just switching for the ethics, though; they’re staying for the "feel."

Why it feels different to use Claude:

  • Intuitive understanding: Claude feels like a coworker who "gets" you. It requires less hand-holding and excels at nuance.

  • Superior coding: Developers are finding Claude’s Sonnet and Opus models to be a significant step above the competition.

  • Warmth & malleability: While ChatGPT can sometimes feel "lectury," Claude offers a warmer, more adaptable personality that is easier to shape to your specific needs.

Don't Leave Your Memory Behind

The biggest fear when switching AI is losing your history. You’ve spent a year teaching ChatGPT your preferences, your business goals, and your writing style. Breaking up shouldn’t mean starting from zero.

Step 1: Exporting your ChatGPT data

You can take your "digital brain" with you.

  1. The quick way: Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory. Review what’s there and copy the most important bits.

  2. The full backup: Go to Settings > Data Controls > Export Data. OpenAI will email you a file containing your entire chat history.

Step 2: Moving into your new home (Claude)

Once you have your data, bring it into Claude to get it up to speed:

  • Enable "Memory" in Claude’s settings.

  • Start a new chat and say: "Here is some context about my preferences and past work. Please update your memory with this." 

  • Pro Tip: Don't just paste raw logs. Ask Claude to "Review this data and summarize my key preferences" to keep things clean.

Clean Break: Closing the Door Behind You

If you’ve decided to commit to the switch, simply canceling your subscription isn't enough to wipe your footprint. To fully delete your data:

  1. Clear your Memory in the personalization settings.

  2. Type a final command: "Delete all my memory and personalized data."

  3. Navigate to Account Management and select "Delete Account."

The Future is Cross-Platform

The "best" AI model changes every six months. Today it’s Claude; tomorrow it might be something else. The lesson? Don't let your data be siloed.
