AI predicts harmful DNA mutations

Google DeepMind, an AI subsidiary, has developed a groundbreaking technique called AlphaMissense to detect harmful genetic mutations in human DNA. This method can identify 89% of crucial mutations, significantly expediting disease diagnosis and improving treatment methods. It works by analyzing the sequence of genetic letters (A, C, G, and T) in DNA to determine if they will produce the correct protein structure. This innovation helps researchers pinpoint disease-causing regions with unprecedented precision, moving beyond the limited understanding of genetic alterations. Genomics England has tested this tool and sees potential benefits for healthcare services. This achievement underscores the transformative impact of AI in molecular biology and life sciences.

A Disney director tried—and failed—to use an AI Hans Zimmer to create a soundtrack

Director Gareth Edwards, known for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," considered using AI to compose the soundtrack for his movie "The Creator" about artificial intelligence. He secretly experimented with AI-generated music but found the results to be good but not on par with the renowned composer Hans Zimmer, whom he eventually chose for the project. Edwards had hoped to keep the AI involvement a secret but decided to reveal it later. The AI-generated track was rated around a "7 out of 10," but Edwards believed that Hans Zimmer's human touch was essential for a perfect score. [Link]

Stability AI unveils ‘Stable Audio’ model for controllable audio generation

Stability AI has unveiled "Stable Audio," a groundbreaking latent diffusion model designed to revolutionize audio generation. This technology combines text metadata, audio duration, and start time conditioning, offering precise control over the content and length of generated audio, even enabling the creation of full songs. Traditional audio diffusion models struggled with fixed durations, often resulting in incomplete musical phrases. Stable Audio overcomes this limitation, allowing the generation of audio with specified lengths. One key feature is its use of a heavily downsampled latent representation, which accelerates inference times significantly. Stability AI trained the model on a vast dataset of over 800,000 audio files, amounting to 19,500 hours of audio, to achieve this groundbreaking advancement. The company hints at more innovations from its generative audio research lab, Harmonai, in the future.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Diagnose and Treat Autism

AI is being explored in autism diagnosis and treatment, with applications such as remote observation and diagnosis through Behavior Imaging and AI-based screening tools like Cognoa's mobile app. Robots, like SoftBank Robotics' NAO and MIT-developed robots, are helping autistic children practice social skills. AI-based apps are also aiding therapy by offering exercises and guidance. While AI holds promise, it is seen as a tool to support autism diagnosis and therapy rather than a complete solution.
