Umang Bhatt, an advisor to the Responsible AI Institute and an assistant professor at New York University, emphasizes the significance of this standard. He points out that it goes beyond high-level principles, offering concrete guidelines. An AI management system, as specified by the standard, is designed to establish policies, objectives, and processes related to the responsible development, provision, or use of AI systems.
Concrete Guidelines for Responsible AI
Unlike high-level principles, ISO/IEC 42001 offers concrete guidelines to support responsible AI development. Hoda Heidari, co-lead of the Responsible AI Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University, notes that the standard instills confidence in AI developers. It assures them that appropriate processes were followed during system creation and evaluation, and there are mechanisms in place to monitor and address adverse outcomes. This detailed guidance is essential, especially in a rapidly evolving technological landscape, ensuring that developers have a tangible framework to adhere to.

Virginia Dignum, a professor at Umeå University, suggests that big tech firms adopting the standard can lead to a domino effect, encouraging others to follow suit. Amazon's AWS, having participated in creating the standard, is actively pursuing its adoption. The role of standards in cultivating public trust is comparable to the rigorous testing and adherence to standards seen in industries like automotive, where safety standards are paramount.

As governments worldwide contemplate regulations on AI, the ISO standard positions organizations to be prepared for evolving standards and frameworks. The U.S. government's executive order on AI and the European Union's AI Act, set to take effect by 2025, underscore the importance of having a framework in place.
